Dogs and Dehydration

The glorious summer season is upon us! As much as we welcome the sun and fun, it’s important to remember that the rising temperatures can be tough on a dog’s body. Canines easily get overheated - their only way to release body heat is by panting and through a limited number of sweat glands between their toes. Before taking your pup on an outdoor excursion, check out ways to keep your pup well hydrated and cool! Don’t leave your pet in your vehicle unattended. On a 75-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can climb up to 115 degrees within an hour. Even with the windows down, a dog can easily overheat if left in these conditions. If you need to run errands, leave your pup at home. It...

Are Dental Veneers the Right Choice?

Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth, often changing the color, shape, size, or length of the teeth. Dental veneers can be manufactured from porcelain or resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of the natural tooth. Resin veneers are thinner and require less removal of the tooth surface before placement. If you have questions to see if dental veneers are the right dental plan for you, book your consultation with Dr. Malcomson...

Mouth Breathing During Sleep May Increase Risk of Tooth Decay

Researchers from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand discovered by way of various sleep studies, that throughout a person’s stages of sleep, the ‘mouth breathers’ have a lower acidity level. In fact, results showed that mouth breathers fall well below the threshold of when a tooth's enamel may begin to break down and bacteria can readily take hold and cause problems. What does this mean? Breathing through your mouth can dry your saliva (which ironically is an important defense mechanism for preventing the mouth from becoming too acidic), studies show that dry-mouth individuals run a higher risk of erosion, than individuals with normal salivary secretion rates. Lower acidity leads to loss of tooth enamel through erosion (the direct...
