Family Time: Local Arts with Children

Throughout the year, local venues offer free to low cost entertainment. Take in a musical, a seasonal play, maybe even a holiday ballet. Your child’s play time can often be indoors watching television and connected to electronic devices. Why not enjoy some fun and enlightening family time that is sure to make memories. Without spending hundreds of dollars, a short drive to Washington, D.C. to walk around the tidal basin during Cherry Blossom festival, or take in a museum. Attending a performance at the Kennedy Center, is sure to introduce a child to the world of the performing arts, but many local colleges, and theaters, middle and high schools offer low to no cost theatrical performances. Check Montgomery County Public School‘s Fine Arts calendar for performances ranging from theater to chorus, instrumental music to dance.

The Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center offers film, musicals and plays for patrons of all ages. Located on Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, the Metropolitan Ballet Theatre’s version of The Nutcracker performs each December. Tickets are affordably priced at $10-26.

The Olney Theater often has auditions for their plays. Whether a youth is an aspiring actor or an adult would like to dust off the cobwebs, many locals are actively involved with productions. This past holiday season, Mary Poppins and Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol were popular performances. The Olney Theater’s 2017 calendar includes performances such as: The Diary of Anne Frank, Rainbow Fish, The House at Pooh Corner, and My Fair Lady, and young girls’ favorite… Anne of Green Gables (an 8 book collection is available on Smile.Amazon.com). The Adventure Theater at Glen Echo Park encourages youth who may be interested in student theater, by offering theater classes. Professional performances such as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe based on C.S. Lewis’ story, is perfect for children and adults alike. Parents can also book their child’s birthday party, as many of the theaters offer group ticket sales.
